A Varied Repertoire
Since our founding in 1998, Eight Strings & a Whistle has been performing old and new works composed for the Trio’s unique combination of flute, viola and cello. Our goal for every program is to allow each work to be its own gem, highlighting its unique timbre and color, while creating a whole that is balanced with a beautiful and interesting palette.
We are proud of our success with this approach to programming. In addition to our commissions, we perform original repertoire from the Baroque period and works by established composers from Europe and North and South America dating from the mid-19th through the end of the 20th centuries -- a tremendous range in styles!
The first performance of a work is an integral part to the curve of completely learning it. The only way to unleash the full potential of any piece is through repeated performances. Eight Strings & a Whistle is unique in that we make a special point of putting our newest pieces, including our commissions, into our performance rotation, just as a string quartet or a piano trio will repeatedly program traditional works.
