Thanks so much for your contributions to the festival, not only through your beautiful performance but also through your work with our students. I hope our paths cross again, too, and soon!”
Wonderful performance on Sunday.”
It was kind of a beam of light in this otherwise dark world… I am amazed at how in sync the 3 of you are.”
I love listening to Eight Strings & a Whistle. Your musicality and attention to the composer’s intentions come through in everything you play. The phrase that comes to mind is ‘passionate elegance’.”
Building on our advocacy for new music, we launched our first Composer Competition in 2017. Held every two years, the 8SW Composer Competition invites composers of all ages enrolled in an accredited degree program at the time of application to submit a work composed for flute, viola and cello. The First Prize is the New York Premiere of the winning composer’s work on our annual Fall concert, and a Featured Composer interview on our website.
Eight Strings & a Whistle is pleased to announce that the application period for the 2020 8SW Composer Competition will open on September 15, 2019. For application guidelines and rules please visit our 8SW Composer Competition page.
Douglas Anderson is among one of the first composers to have written a work for Eight Strings & a Whistle. Commissioned in 2000, his Chamber Symphony No. 3 has received numerous performances since its premiere. Our recording of it was released by Ravello Records in 2016 on Douglas Anderson, Chamber Symphonies 2, 3 & 4.
