They are back — the summer PopUP! We are always excited to present these concerts, especially this summer, when we will play at such a great space.
What is a PopUP!? Good question. The PopUP!s are a chance for us to present new works (or at least works new to us) to an audience and get their reaction. Does the piece connect? Are we getting the guts, the essence, the emotion of the piece across?
At its best, we want to have a conversation with the attendees — what do you hear? What do you feel? And of course, we want everyone to have a good time, too.
We are very excited to be presenting this PopUP! at 2B&2C: The Ken Cro-Ken Memorial Foundation. This lovely little gallery honors the memory of Ken Cro-Ken. As their website states : “Our name, 2B&2C, comes from the Lower East Side garden-studio of the late Ken Cro-Ken, ecosystem painter and multidisciplinary artist, who dedicated his life to improving his community through art, nature, and literature….2B&2C: The Ken Cro-Ken Memorial Foundation honors Ken’s life by providing artistic and cultural experiences to the public, free-of-cost, in hopes of perpetuating his legacy of love and community development.”
At this PopUP!, we will be playing two trio works and two solo pieces. While I won’t tell you any details about these pieces, each of them do have a connection to nature, the production of sound in a natural way and humans’ relationship to time and ritual. And all four were written by composers whose have previously written works Eight Strings & a Whistle. We are so happy to expand our relationship with these composers and share them with the community.
2B&2C is an intimate space –– that’s NY real estate talk for small! –– but it has a lovely acoustic and is perfect for an event like our PopUPs! Weather permitting we will be outside, in the backside courtyard for this concert. Of course, July in NYC… could be too hot, could rain, air could be unbreathable, so plan B is to use the inside gallery space. No loss there, as it is sure to be filled with intriguing art.
If you are here on July 18, we hope you can join us. But don’t fret if you aren’t able to make it. We will visit these pieces again, and who knows? I think we will be back at 2B&2C again in the future.
