Residencies
Generally speaking, residencies entail musical interaction, a chance for real hands-on participation with a musical ensemble. Our residencies involve a wide array of school and community groups. We’ve conducted many successful residencies, taking our interactive musical experiences to organizations including the Southeast Missouri State University | SEMO, Arcady Festival, Schoodic Arts for All, the Bar Harbor Music Festival and Skidmore College.
Augmenting our traditional concerts, we provide short programs for students, (elementary through high school), chamber music coaching and master classes for small ensembles. We also lead workshops for students, composers and players of all ages and levels.
Types of Residencies
For Community Arts Organizations
We will work with your organization to design a residency suited to your needs. Whether you want programs or workshops for small children or senior citizens, we will work with you to create a unique program. Multi-day residencies give us the chance to get to know and work closely with your members and constituencies.
We are also very experienced in working with adult amateur musicians and have adapted many of our workshops and classes for these players.

For Colleges and Universities
In addition to our work as performers, all three of us teach at the University level. Suzanne is on the wind and chamber music faculty of New York University, while Ina and Matt are adjunct lecturers at the City University of New York. In addition to a performance for the college or university community at large, we offer master classes for composition students, and traditional master classes in flute, viola and cello as well as chamber music coaching. We also offer workshops such as Expanding Boundaries: the craft of programming and What Do YOU Want? (Navigating life after school with music on a crooked pathway)
This is generally a two or three-day residency, depending on the number of programs added to the formal concert. Please contact us for fee information.
For Schools
Eight Strings & a Whistle offers short (ca. 45 minutes) school programs for elementary through high school students. These programs can serve as an introduction to wind and string instruments as well as performing in an ensemble. For more experienced students, we offer traditional master classes or clinics for the flute, viola and cello. Other options include workshops such as The Art of Communication in Chamber Music or classes focused on practicing or preparing for an audition.
This is generally a one-day residency. Please contact us for fee information.
Long-Term Residencies
Longer residencies take place over multiple days, and may span several months or a full year. This type of residency can include performances in a variety of venues within a community, such as senior citizen centers and residences, community centers, libraries and schools. It can also include a series of “one visit” or longer-term workshops, such as working with a school to develop a chamber music program or meeting and working with student ensembles. Meeting with young ensembles multiple times provides them the unique experience of working and developing as a chamber ensemble.
