8SW Composer Competition

Building on its advocacy for new music, Eight Strings & a Whistle launched its first 8SW Composer Competition in 2017. Held every two years, the Competition invites composers of all ages enrolled in an accredited degree program at the time of application to submit a work composed for flute, viola and cello. The First Prize is the World Premiere of the winning composer’s work on our annual Fall concert in New York City and a Featured Composer interview on our website.

We are over the moon with excitement to be collaborating with the UN Symphony Orchestra and its Music Director and Conductor, Maestro Predrag Vasić to perform Jorge Amado’s Concertino for Flute, Viola and Cello and string orchestra.

Jorge Amado, the first 8SW Composer Competition Winner, composed this concertino as a gift to the Trio in 2019. Unfortunately plans to perform it during the 2020-21 season were thwarted by the worldwide pandemic. We are thrilled to have it back on our calendar!

The UN Symphony Orchestra is an international ensemble of musicians who work at the United Nations, as well as other international organizations, agencies, programs and funds located in New York. We are very excited to presenting the premiere of this exciting and fun piece with this ensemble at beautiful Merkin Hall.

The program will include Vladimir Tošić’s Medial 623 (check him out here!) and Brahms’ Symphony No. 3. What a program!  Please join us! To purchase tickets, please visit here.
